Reflection

As it all comes in full circle

Since beginning my journey at FIU I have had many incredible opportunities that have helped make me who I am today.

My global awareness or understanding that everything is interconnected has been a reoccurring theme in practically every experience thus far.  There will always be someone who relies on what just happened; for every cause, there will be an effect.

A global perspective is being able to take others' points of view into consideration. I have definitely seen different perspectives throughout the many places I've been and right in the very own, diverse community of FIU. Each person's opinion is valuable to make the best possible solution or compromise. Sometimes just having everyone shares there own ideas will spark more ideas in others and it will soon become a ripple effect. It is important to also be able to step outside of one's own understanding and see things the way others are seeing them, it can actually be mind-blowing when you first see something that you may have never even considered.

We see, we do, we say, all based on our previous experiences in life. Share in the moment of someone else's life to see something with a new lens and you might be surprised what you see.

Through the Shuks or markets of Tel Aviv to the ancestors from South Africa needing to globally engage was bound to happen. Solving problems from local to international it is an important skill that for everyone to have.

Through the Global Learning Program I have been able to obtain these skills and global understandings about what it takes to first be aware, then to consider all points, and to engage and find a solution if there is a problem and with the understanding of where others are coming from makes a world of difference.

"Seek first to understand, then to be understood" - Stephen R. Covey

I plan to continue to do my part as a global citizen no matter where I am. I have learned we go further in life by listening and understanding each other so I plan to continue to use these global initiatives in my daily life and improve on them.

Two competencies I feel most confident with is communication and interpersonal interaction. Communication is instilled in everything we do. Communication and interpersonal interaction go hand-in-hand. We communicate verbally, through emotions, online, and even by the absence of communicating.  Communication is vital to success whether it be on an academic level, in an organization or in life in general. in order to effectively communicate it is necessary to understand active listening.

Once, this is done, you may begin to understand where they are coming from. which is the beginning of understanding interpersonal interactions and thus being able to express yourself directly and openly to the other person. I was able to do this on various different accounts within the different experiences I have had.
